Last Odyssey

Eidolons

A Hero’s eidolon is a godlike being whose power protects and is in turn fed by the deepest parts of a Hero’s soul. Eidolons are extraordinary creatures, and can take a myriad of physical forms when they manifest. One Hero might be protected by a powerful dragon, while another might fight alongside an ethereal goddess. In Last Odyssey, a Hero’s eidolon performs two main functions. The first of these is to intervene in order to save Heroes from True Death, and the second of these is to be summoned during combat to fight on their behalf.

The Basics

An eidolon’s element is the same as their summoner’s, and always counts as innate. An eidolon’s statistics are determined by the base attributes of the character that summoned them and by their class, which is a fixed role that corresponds to one of the six standard Hero roles. The exceptions to this are Mana, which eidolons do not need to expend in order to use their abilities, and Initiative, since the eidolon does not enter the Initiative Order in the same way as other characters. Instead, their abilities are either free or cost 🜉, and they act during the same turn as their summoner in the Initiative Order. They also gain the same number of Action Points per round as their summoner. When they are first summoned, they start with the same amount of AP that the Hero who summoned them had remaining before they used the Summon Eidolon action, and can immediately take their turn.

Summoning

At the beginning of each round after an eidolon is summoned, their summoner must either spend 1 🜉 to keep them on the field or else the eidolon is unsummoned and the Initiative Order goes back to normal. If the eidolon drops to 0 HP, they are also unsummoned, and will revert back to 1 HP after the battle is over. When an eidolon is unsummoned, whatever HP they had remains until it is healed by their summoner, but they lose all other effects, including charms, hexes, Shells, and statuses. Due to their stature, eidolons always count as being in the front row.

When not summoned, an eidolon is immaterial, and thus no abilities apart from Full Restore or any items can be used on them. This means that, for example, Heroes cannot heal their eidolons with anything other than Full Restore. Eidolons have no inventory, either, and cannot use items during battle or outside of it.

The Birth of the Eidolon

As per the rules for Hero creation, not all characters will begin their journey with a pre-established Inspiration. The first time a Hero with no Inspiration summons their eidolon, they must declare one on the spot or the summoning will not work. This has the side effect that no Hero may advance above tier 1 without choosing an Inspiration.

Eidolons in Combat

An eidolon’s combat abilities do not cost MP. In addition, eidolons act in lieu of their summoner during their summoner’s turn in the Initiative Order. Therefore, they do not have Mana or Initiative, but otherwise they share the same statistics that all Heroes have. Each of their statistics also receives a bonus given by their class, which is the same as the bonus to a Hero’s statistics from the corresponding role of the same name. For example, an eidolon that is a Striker gets a bonus to their Physical Attack equal to their summoner’s Body, an eidolon that is a Caster gets a bonus to their Magical Attack equal to their summoner’s Mind, and so on. The formulae for their statistics are as follows:

As Heroes advance in tier, they will unlock unique capstone abilities that only their eidolons can use. In addition, a Hero’s eidolon may also use two basic abilities and two abilities determined by its class. All eidolons have the following abilities:

Name Type Cost Description
Attack Melee 1 AP The eidolon makes a colorless strike against a single target.
Full Restore Self 1 🜉, 1 AP The eidolon removes all statuses from itself and immediately restores itself to full HP.

Heroes are also allowed to spend 1 🜉 to trigger Full Restore outside of combat, healing their eidolon back to full HP.
