Equipment Upgrades
In addition to a piece of equipment’s basic properties, each one also has a number of attached extra effects known as upgrades, each of which takes up a certain number of upgrade slots, or slots for short. The total number of upgrade slots that can be occupied by upgrades is determined by the equipment’s Grade. Novice equipment has 1 upgrade slot, Standard equipment has a 2 slots, and Expert equipment has 3 slots. Unique weapons and armor count as having 3 slots as well, but have additional unique upgrades that distinguish them from all other pieces of equipment. The exception to this rule is accessories, which do not have upgrade slots but instead each possess a single upgrade that either counts as Partial or Total. Accessories with Partial upgrades give bonuses to a character’s Evasion or Resistance, while accessories with Total upgrades do not.
Equipment by Tier
Novice equipment is meant to be used by Heroes of tier 1-4, Standard equipment is meant to be used by Heroes of tier 4-6, Expert equipment is meant to be used by Heroes of tier 7-9, and Unique equipment is meant to be acquired by Heroes of tier 9-10. Accessories are meant to be used at any tier, since their effects are cumulative per the number currently being worn.
Upgrade Pricing
To remove an upgrade from a piece of equipment costs 100 ¤ times the total slots it takes up on the piece of equipment. To add an upgrade to a piece of equipment costs an amount of ¤ equal to the difference between what the equipment would cost with the upgrade and what the equipment would cost without it, plus 500 ¤, 1000 ¤, or 5000 ¤ if the upgrade takes up 1, 2, or 3 slots, respectively. Regardless of how it’s done, upgrading a piece of equipment is a painstaking process, and will take a number of days equal to 1d4 multiplied by the number of slots the upgrade will take up. Professionals capable of producing precisely the upgrade that players want are rare, and finding one for more powerful upgrades is an appropriate goal for a quest.
